International move cost & tips guide

international moving
June 7, 2014 |

Moving to another country is incredibly stressful. The cost, time, and change involved can wreck havoc on your mind and body. The fact that you have a certain amount of time to complete your move will likely make you feel even more on edge. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. There are thousands of people who move to different countries every year. They bring their families far from their home to start a new life or to obtain a better income. If you are moving to the wild unknown, consider the following moving costs and tips to help make your move a painless process.

Moving costs

The average costs companies claim for relocating employees to a different country is around $250,000. Sound like a lot? Well, it is. However, this number accounts for the amount of rent or mortgage paid if the individual is allowed to buy a house. For the average individual going at it alone, the number is closer to $10,000 to $15,000 depending upon location. These costs are amplified by transportation costs, moving belongings overseas through air freights, and differences in living costs. All of these things add up over the course of a few months and thus contribute to the average cost of international moving for Americans.

Tips and Guide

Before you can move overseas, you must decide what you will be doing with your current home. Are you renting? Then you will need to terminate your lease. Do you own your home? Then obviously you will need to sell it. All of these factors contribute to the general costs of moving to a new country as well.

After you have analyzed the cost and decided what we will happen to your current residence, you can then start planning your move. Finding international movers is far different than dedicating your time to finding an international mover who won’t charge you ridiculous rates. Once you find a reasonable moving company, you can then move on to deciding on a move date and start packing your items.

Also, apply for your visas and work permits well in advance of your move date. Don’t wait until the last minute to prepare these important documents. It often takes months to legitimize them.

In addition to the tips and information above, consider the following checklist of must do’s before your big move.

  • Arrange for temporary accommodation and transportation
  • Give your child’s school notice of the move
  • Discover what vaccinations are necessary
  • Transfer your medical records or obtain them from your doctor
